Brendan Osei's quiet, typical life was upended when a family emergency brought him back home to Kansas. Lost and unsure of his place in a now unfamiliar town, Brendan finds himself hungry for purpose. That desire, paired with a voracious appetite for the macabre, leads him to follow in his father's footsteps and join the local PD. He quickly moves into homicide due to his deduction skills, sharp eye, and an almost supernatural ability to read people.
Things are dull until a mutilated corpse appears on the cemetery grounds of a recently abandoned church and all hell - quite literally - breaks loose. The new priest in town, a man named Jay Belmont, is shifty, suspicious, and devilishly handsome, and his tight lips not only aggravate but arouse the young detective.
A strange, almost otherworldly pull calls Brendan toward the Belmont family and the unusual activities taking place on the grounds of the Saint-Denis church. The men soon find themselves tangled up in a messy mystery involving rituals, bible verses, and religious imagery that rattles the unsuspecting Kansas suburb. All the while, Brendan and Jay find themselves tangled in a heavenly war and hellish desire that spans many a millennia...
